Default Whatizit?

And so, been in Mobile, AL since Sunday. When I'm here I do a lot of driving and poking around the area. I was poking around Bayou La Batre on my way to Dauphin island when I spotted this in a combination scrapyard & boat repair place. Hard to tell where one stops and the other starts since Katrina.

I am pretty sure - and a couple locals agree - that it is a sub of some sort. A damn small one. Where the locals disagree is on exactly what its purpose was and how it got there. Apparently the junk guy has had it for quite a while, just recently moved it to it's current location.

So, (yes Wrench, I'm talking to you...) what is the purpose of this contraption?

This thing is so cool looking I wish it was in my yard, the best lawn ornament ever!

I would PAY to get a look inside this.

That's one-a them tank truck to submarine conversion kits. You can buy 'em on line. Kinda like those Volkswagon to classic sports car conversion kits. These things never really caught on and are considered by most professional mariners to be generally a bad idea.

I understand the Iranian navy toyed with the idea for awhile before eventually abandoning it for armed inner tubes.

IMO boarding one of these anywhere except on dry land is a bad idea...

Personally, I'd be content to stand back at a safe distance and snap a photo of it with my cell phone.

Don't know if the fence is there to keep people from getting in or to keep this from getting out.

Kinda looks like one of those Boston Duck boats on steroids after a night on the town. The front end is reminiscent of a train from the early 30s..could be very deco with a few alterations!

No matter whatizit, I'll walk thank you!

ARMED INNER TUBES!?? Talk about inflated ego!

Well, it appears that it is a Soviet submersible built in 1968. Not clear how it ended up in a scrapyard in Alabama.

No doubt it washed ashore nearby.
